Question: What do you think of these file sharing sites like DropBox and RapidShare? Are they safe? Can I use them?
Answer: Generally, we do not recommend to our clients to use any of the free file sharing sites available on the Internet. There are many sites out there, and very few companies have an acceptable track record regarding security. In addition to security breaches, some of these sites have been sources of viri and malware that damage your equipment or the equipment of the people you're trying to share files with. The risk is too high for the benefit provided; that is why we don't recommend them.
A reasonable alternative that compuKarma suggests is to use some of the private web space that most ISP providers offer to their clients. You can upload the files you want to share to a private area and provide a private link to the party with whom you wish to share your files. There are simple programs available on PC or Mac to upload the files securely to your account, and you can email them a link to the information. There are no limits on the size of the files except for the quota you're allowed on your ISP’s servers.
Some of the photo sharing sites have improved dramatically over the years, but here again, our primary recommendation is to use a folder amongst your private web space and a photo album creator; this will allow you to maintain total control over the information since you're hosting the information, not some disinterested third party that is interested in selling you something.
Sometimes, you're simply in a situation where you have no choice but to share information through a file-sharing service. In this situation, where you must use an existing service, we believe Google's holistic approach to security with regards to all the data they maintain on behalf of their customers is the most consistently safe and impenetrable to hackers. Therefore, we recommend the use of Google Drive and Google Docs as the best way to collaborate and share a variety of documents and file types. Be aware that there are limitations on the sizes of files in Google Drive and all file-sharing services.
