>  Is my next computer a tablet?

Question: There are more tablets than PCs to choose from. Is my next computer a tablet?

Answer: The introduction of the iPad in 2010 was a transformative event in desktop computing and signaled the end of both the PC computer as well as the Mac computer. Or at least some would like for us to believe this. There is no doubt that the convenience of the tablet over the PC or Mac cannot be questioned, and the numbers don't lie. There has been a huge shift in computing usage since tablets were introduced.

Of course Apple was not the only manufacturer that saw the market opportunities of tablet computing. Google's Android operating system is running on a significant portion of today's tablets, and there is so much selection now, both in brand, size, and functionality that one must wade through a great deal of information in order to find the right tablet to fit their needs.

When our clients ask us about their next computer purchase, they inevitably ask about tablets, specifically due to cost and convenience. The first thing we do is listen to our clients explain how they use their computers and how they wish to use their computers. In businesses, tablets can help reduce paperwork, and they can be used as documentation devices. But they are not for everyone, and they are certainly not for every circumstance. Those that are heavily dependent upon writing tend to prefer to have a keyboard at their disposal and are very intimidated by the notion of a virtual keyboard. Of course, Bluetooth keyboards and hybrid computers can solve that problem for most of us. Those that require the utmost in data security will find tablets to miss the mark. Apps are significantly less secure that a web page loaded into a secure locked-down web browser. Even if you find yourself using your tablet for 95% of your computing needs, we still strongly urge our clients to do their banking not with apps on a tablet or smartphone, but at their desktop computer on a secure web browser.

When you are ready to make a purchase, make sure that you play with the device you are considering. Touch it. Feel it in your hands. Make sure you can see the screen well. Try to run some apps. Live with it for awhile in the store. If you have certain expectations, contact compuKarma and we will help you make a purchase that enhances your computing.
