Question: My firm needs to upgrade some of our PC computers for our Manhattan office. Should I buy them with Windows 7 or Windows 8? I've heard some problems about Windows 8, just like we had years ago when Windows Vista was introduced. What do I do?
Answer: Normally, you shouldn't even have to ask such a question, because the answer should always be that you purchase the latest available operating system for the hardware you have specified. Regrettably, with the introduction of Windows 8 in 2012, this operating system was heavily criticized, not because of what its new features did, but more for what previously stable Windows features were removed. This tablet-optimized Windows 8 caused much unnecessary angst at the time, and to this day, users are confused.
In order for you to make an informed decision, compuKarma helps you evaluate your hardware needs. We examine every aspect of how you use your equipment as well as the challenges you face in your business. Then we can determine if tablets and/or touchscreens will be part of your business strategy. This is determined by the type of business you do and how you use computers. We help you figure out what is possible and then tailor a solution that reflects the way you work.
The most important difference, from a user perspective, is that Windows 8 supports touchscreen tablets while Windows 7 does not. These touchscreens are intended to look very much like Windows Phones. Much like Apple, Microsoft would like its customers to do things the Microsoft Way. So if you are purchasing new monitors with your computer or if you have applications that could benefit from the use of touchscreens, then Windows 8 may be for you.
However, there have been a number of issues with Windows 8 reported in the media since its release in 2012 that have accurately portrayed it as "change for change's sake". If that were not troubling enough, due to lost functionality, many consider it a step backwards. At compuKarma, we find that change is good when it transforms the way you work. Excel, the spreadsheet program, is a great example of this. But when change causes more problems than it solves, it can be disruptive and confusing. compuKarma has decades of experience to ensure we never inflict change on our clients.
For this reason, compuKarma supports its clients' efforts to modify their new equipment to use Windows 7, and we recommend Windows 7 Professional Edition for all hardware. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as purchasing the Windows 7 Pro installation disk. Before you make that hardware purchase, let us help evaluate it and ensure that all components will work properly and all drivers will be available and compatible with your purchase. While it is a bit extra work up front, the saved time and reduced support costs far outweigh the additional expense of replacing Windows 8 with Windows 7.
